Does the item in question speak to your soul?

First you need to understand how the item makes you feel, what is the first thought that comes to mind? Does the item make you feel light, relaxed, warmth, fondness, and engaged? Does the item help improve your life or space? If you can not say without a sliver of doubt that it serves some purpose that soothes your soul then it is time to let it go! Sometimes, we have a hard time agreeing to let things go and it is okay but if it doesn’t truly speak to your soul then you should let it go.

If you still can not decide then there are plenty more questions to ask to know for sure! I love Kondo’s strategy for keeping a tighty home. This strategy is known as KonMari which is built upon the same principle of how the item makes you feel. Let the purge of belongings begin!

Does the item in question have a good use?

Possessions in life should contribute to how effective you are! Empowerment so that you do things that were born to do. That you have always meant to do! Becoming more self aware when thinking, does this item have a good use or is it just collecting dust, is it one more thing you have to clean or do something with? Does the item add more stress in life or does it take the stress away?

What happens is we get this stuck energy in our lives and we need to clear it and move forward more positively. If the item was given to you from a dear loved one then the question remains does the item suit you or does it suit them?  If it doesn’t speak to your soul and doesn’t have a good use then why are you still hanging on to it? This is very powerful to let things go that no longer serve you. If for instance you have a cornhole game you and your friends or family never play anymore and it just sits, let it go! Or you have something broken that you just can’t seem to let go, because one day you’re going to fix it. Let that day to fix it be today or throw the thing away.

Is the item in question gorgeous?

This may sound super simple and very elementary but if the item in question isn’t automatically a feeling of yes it’s gorgeous!!! Then by all means vamoose! Get it out of your life and don’t look back. Things in your life should create a feeling of being lovely, charming and delightful. Your possessions should be as gorgeous as you are! This is so simple and should speak volumes to how you feel inside. It is amazing what your outside environmental impact can do to your soul. Some things in life you can’t control but what you can control is what is around you. Find beauty in what is around you. Make your life beautiful because only you have the ability to.

Also, on that note it doesn’t matter what happened yesterday it is how you move on today that matters. So if it isn’t gorgeous let the purge of belongings begin!

Does the item give in return? The purge of belongings!

Your possessions should serve some sort of purpose, does it bring you a good feeling or energy that gives in return? Does it pull on your heart strings and make you smile and light up when you see it? What feelings does it give you? Good feelings? Does it make you think of a fun time or vacation you went on? Do you think of a silly memory? Really think about if the item creates this kind of energy. If the item does not!!! It is time to leave that ugly sweater your ex’s mom bought you in the trash! If someone bought you an item that is just no longer serving you, do not be afraid! Let it go! You will still remember your ex’s mom in whatever light, good or bad, without having that thing in your life.

Do you fill cupboards and drawers so full that it overflows? It’s time to declutter! Just know that the frustration you feel does not need to happen! If things in life are making you feel shameful or frustrating you need to take responsibility for how you are feeling and make time to do something about it to change. Maybe it isn’t a huge thing right away, maybe it is one item at a time. Small steps, even the smallest over time create big change over the course of a year or more. Every item in your home should give love in return. Energy that is stuck is stagnate serving no purpose so let the purge of belongings happen!

Is the item current?

Does this item speak to the present day? This question can be a very important question because your belongings can be a reminder of another time in your life and can bring more pain and shame. A Lot of people go through life living in the past or future and there is nothing at all wrong with remembering or planning ahead. With that being said, holding onto items that remind you of a not so pleasant memory is damaging and draining. It can create a feeling you have everyday enabling you from, changing your life in a positive way.

For instance holding on to your size 2 skinny jeans that you know you may never fit in ever again not because you can’t work hard to become the old you again… It’s more that it doesn’t suit your needs anymore. It reminds you of a time you were skinny! Creating a feeling of disappointment… When really all you need to do is cut out wheat, beer, limit wine to a few glasses! Get out and find some sort of exercise you love. If you do the things you love to do and make time to get more active in your life you can throw away those fat pants! I’ve been stuck, unhappy, and thinking that my life can never change but guess what? It absolutely can! It starts with you! You are in control of every aspect of your life!

There is power in now! The purge of belongings!

In the past, is the land of memories. Things that no longer serve us, outdated beliefs, or raw painful emotions of a different time or place. Creating a space around us that is inviting and welcoming of good feeling is important. If you’re constantly being reminded of how you’re failing… How are you supposed to win?  We can’t live our future in fear and if we have the ability to change the feelings around us we shouldn’t feel guilty or sad anymore. Find a way to be at peace with today and if you aren’t happy with something in your life change it.

Living life in the future creates a space for focusing on what could happen which can lead to missing important moments and trying to ward off potential hazards.  The worst is I will keep this because I might need it one day, or I need this just in case. The problem is that someday it comes and you can’t find the item in question so you run to the store and buy another doo kicky. Creating space for more clutter and disappointment there for the purge of belongings is necessary!

Create the life you want now!

A very powerful book I read and I highly recommend reading it is the power of now by Eckhart Tolle because our human ego does a great job of either keeping us in the past or in the future but what is very important is the here and now! When we embrace our current situation, whatever that looks like, we can dance in the here and now! How powerful is that! To just take control of our day and our physical environment plays a huge part in that.

If you do not like your current environment, step out of it for the day. Come back to it with a fresh set of eyes and pick up one thing and decide if you love it or hate it! Part of living life to the fullest is trusting that what we need will come to us at the perfect time! That we are flexible enough to handle whatever might come our way! Sometimes in life you can not control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond to what happens.

Does it have a place to go?

One of the best questions to ask when contemplating getting rid of something is… Does it have a place to go? Does it have a home? This way of thinking creates a feeling of appreciation for the thing. You have chosen to fill your life with this item and out of all the items you could have chosen you choose this one! If it doesn’t have a home you need to ask yourself why?  The reason is that you just don’t care enough about the item to really fully appreciate it.

I have a wonderful vase I spent maybe over $100 dollars on at least 10 years ago. It is still one of my favorite items in my home and it is the center of my hallway. Does it collect dust sure but I absolutely love it and it has a sacred space to live. The fact that I actually remember the store and when I bought it, automatically makes it sacred. Therefore you must show gratitude for your possessions! Which means to treat it with respect by keeping it clean and neat. If the item is neglected with dust then there is no appreciation! Without appreciation in life you can not see the beauty in what is right in front of you.

Does the item spread love?

Does this possession help you spread your love to the world? In life everyone feels love differently that is why there is more than one love language! However, we are here to serve by sharing our love. Maybe it is random acts of kindness? The point is that your soul knows the unique ways you are meant to love. Your vision of life directly affects your inner and outer spaces! So if it doesn’t serve you it no longer spreads love to the world. If you are frustrated then this frustration will be taken out on the world. Maybe it is that unsuspecting cashier who you lashed out at because you’re not feeling yourself.  Let the frustration go! Let the anger go! Today it no longer serves you. Let stuff go.

I hope you loved the purge of belongings! I hope that it brings you to a fuller life, and a clutter free space so that you can live your best life.
