Spread the love

Do we really need earth day to reflect on how we can better celebrate and protect mother earth, our beautiful home, mother earth?!?! I put together a few of my favorite things in this guide for protecting mother earth and I am taking steps in the right direction to help and enjoy our planet even more. I hope this post inspires you to really take a look at how you can make changes in your own lives too.

There are so many things that we can do everyday to make our lives better and to help leave the planet in better shape too… Even very small changes to our daily routines can have an enormous impact! So here’s to another year of doing better!

Protect Mother Earth

Everyday ways we can work to protect mother earth!

Cut down on the things you throw away, conserve our natural resources, and landfill space. We humans are consumers! There is so much unnecessary waste that we honestly probably don’t think about. So reduce, reuse and recycle! Try to find items that you want used. In this day and age you can find just about everything from clothes to building materials at specialized reuse centers and consignment shops. Often, used items are less expensive and just as good as new.

Look for products that use less packaging. When manufacturers make their products with less packaging, they use less raw material. This reduces waste and costs. These extra savings can be passed along to the consumer. Buying in bulk, for example, can reduce packaging and save money which in turn will help protect mother earth.

Buy reusable over disposable items. Look for items that can be reused; the little things can add up. For example, you can bring your own silverware and cup to work, rather than using disposable items. Maintain and repair products, like clothing, tires and appliances, so that they won’t have to be thrown out and replaced as frequently.

Borrow, rent or share items that are used infrequently, like party decorations, tools or furniture.

Conserve water! The less water you use the less runoff and wastewater that ends up in our oceans. Here are the best ways to conserve water in a day.

I know it sounds like a no brainer but turn off the water while you brush your teeth.

Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when you have a full load.

Use a low flow shower head and faucet, and be sure to fix any leaks you might have.

Install a dual flush or low flow toilet or put a conversion kit on your existing toilet.

Don’t overwater your lawn or water during peak periods, and install rain sensors on irrigation systems and install a rain barrel for outdoor watering.

Plant a rain garden for catching stormwater runoff from your roof, driveway, and other hard surfaces.

Monitor your water usage on your water bill and ask your local government about a home water audit.

Choose sustainable foods, and buy organic. Organic farming is generally considered to be more sustainable when it comes to food production. The lack of pesticides and wider variety of plants results in better quality of soil and reduces pollution from fertilizer and/or pesticide run-off.  By grass fed beef because when cows eat grain the water consumption is larger. Also the farmers of grass fed cows regularly move the cows and spread the manure more evenly and improve the quality and quantity of forage growth.

Shop wisely! By buying less plastic and using reusable shopping bags. A lot of people who protest the oil refineries do not realize that when they are out on their plastic kayaks protesting it is actually a byproduct of oil. So… they are supporting what they are actually against? I don’t quite know what they are thinking but without the oil refineries we would also not have plastics. Oil refineries today are obviously safer and create less of a footprint then they did in years past. However, the moral of the story is try not to buy plastic goods.

Buy non toxic chemicals for your home and office. I was always told if you can’t put it in your mouth you shouldn’t put it on your body. The same is true for what is going down the drain.

Plant a tree or plant, because they provide food and oxygen and help save energy. They combat climate change. Plants and gardens are great! There are some very low maintenance plants that you literally don’t have to do anything to and they look absolutely amazing. We have been growing artichokes in our garden for years. They are amazingly beautiful and yummy to eat.

Save the bees! Honey bees play a huge part in keeping our planet safe and healthy. If you can have bees on your property you should because they are amazing little critters.

Bike and carpool more!
